Preparing for Life after College

While the education process is important, it only provides a stepping stone to something bigger and better. Students need to focus on the ultimate prize: a fulfilling job that requires them to put their education to good use. It is advisable for students to start working on breaking into the job they have decided is their best fit while in college.

This message was echoed in the recently held, Zetech College Journalism Students’ Forum. Graduating from college does not guarantee a dream job. The daunting task after college is applying and interviewing for jobs. This doesn’t have to be scary as many students think it would be. It can be exciting. “Creativity, planning and discipline are key requirements in getting a job,” said Ms. Evelyn Serro, G4S’ Communication Manager, during the talk. Treat job hunting like a serious job in itself and give it your full work discipline, carefully plan out how you will use your time and stick to your schedule, and make an effort to define your potential through the eyes of an employer.

In most cases, first jobs do not live up to people’s expectations, and should be considered foundation stones. Nevertheless, the first job should be given the attention and the importance it deserves. It is important for anyone to get into a new job with pride, but at the same time be willing to learn how certain things are done. Know what is expected and learn to adapt lecture room training to the needs and processes of the employer.

Ms. Serro insisted on being versatile. Versatility means having as many skills as possible to help you succeed in the real world after college. It is a competitive world, with a lot of talent. One needs to be skilled in more than one area, be open to new challenges, and remain open-minded to the ever changing nature of doing ‘business’ in general. “The key to survival and ensuring one remains relevant in their organization is being confident, competent and innovative,” she added.

Mr. George Mlaghui, Senior Media Liaison Officer, Orange-Telkom Kenya, who was also present during the talk, shared the same sentiments. He emphasized the importance of personal branding. Strategically positioning oneself is a sure way to get on top of the game. How is that achieved? First, do everything to stay up to date in your field; secondly, keep a database of the people you’d like to impress; finally, share with them the good information which they may be interested in.

According to Mr. Mlaghui, success does not come easy, but it is exciting. “Having passion for what you are doing, being persistent in what you do and having patience in your career growth trajectory will lead you to achieve your dreams,” emphasized the Senior Media Liaison Officer.
